Institute for Clinical Transfusion Medicine and Immunogenetics Ulm

The supply of transfusion medicine products to the University Hospitals in Ulm and the surrounding areas is ensured by the Institute of Clinical Transfusion Medicine and Immunogenetics (IKT).
The IKT is a joint venture of the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service Baden-Wuerttemberg – Hessen and the University Hospital Ulm.

At the Ulm Institute, an emphasis on research exists through close cooperation with the Institute of Transfusion Medicine at the University. The running of the IKT is the responsibility of Hubert Schrezenmeier, M. D., which he has taken over from Bernhard Kubanek, M. D., in 2002. The current director is chair of transfusion medicine at the University Hospital Ulm. The research activities of the institute include, amongst other things: molecular genetics of blood groups and human leukocyte antigen structures (HLA), molecular biological analysis and gene therapy of congenital immunodeficiency syndromes as well as stem cell transplantation and experimental cell therapy.

Great importance is placed on the Central Bone Marrow Registry (ZKRD) which is an independent subsidiary of the Blood Donation Service Baden-Wuerttemberg – Hessen. This is where details of three million German donors are administrated, and 11,500 search requests from national and international patients are dealt with each year. The central database of the German Registry of Stem Cell Transplantation (GRST) is located here in cooperation with the IKT.
