Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunology Mannheim

The Institute in Mannheim looks after the supply of all transfusion medicine products to the University Hospital Mannheim and also for over 25 hospitals in Northern Baden-Wurttemberg and in the Rhein-Neckar area.

Besides the administration of a regional Bone Marrow Donor Database, the Institute also has the second largest national umbilical cord blood bank. Since 1999, the Institute has been run by Prof. Dr. Med. Harald Klüter, who is also chair of Transfusion Medicine and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine Mannheim at the University of Heidelberg.

A GMP clean room and new laboratory facilities have been installed at the Institute. The recently commissioned research projects deal with, amongst other things, cell therapy and immunotherapy using blood stem cells from umbilical cord blood, studying signal transduction of thrombocytes, thrombocyte immunology along with the development of fully-automated techniques for blood group serology.
