Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology Frankfurt/Main

The Institute in Frankfurt supplies the clinics of the Frankfurt University Hospital with a full-range of blood and cellular products and advises the hospital staff on all matters related to transfusion medicine.
Blood products include not only packed red cell concentrates, platelet concentrates and fresh frozen plasma, but also irradiated and CMV negative tested blood components as well as granulocyte concentrates, bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells concentrates for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The Frankfurt institute provides complete transfusion medicine support to more than 100 hospitals in the middle and southern part of the central German state of Hessen.

Our institute is the home of the German Rhein-Main stem cell donor registry (www.stammzellspenderdatei.de) which lists more than 60,000 volunteer bone marrow donors. We are also a reference center for the German Foundation for Organ Transplantation (Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation – DSO) for the central region of Germany. All organ donors and potential solid organ recipients in the region are tested here.

The Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology is headed by Prof. Dr. Erhard Seifried. Dr. Seifried is the Chair for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt/Main. In addition, he also serves as the CEO and Medical Director of the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service Baden-Wuerttemberg – Hessen since 1993. The institute in Frankfurt has over 340 full time equivalent (FTE) positions.

In 2002, the research and development working groups moved into a new laboratory building. This modern laboratory is part of our goal to establish a solid research infrastructure. All research activities are continuously being strengthened and expanded.

Ongoing research projects comprise improvement in blood safety by improving nucleic acid testing (NAT) as well as implementation of pathogen inactivation (PI) methods and novel cellular therapies / experimental tumor therapies, also using natural killer cells (NK-cells) and cell lines. Other fields of research in our institute include: gene therapy for the treatment of haemophilia A and B; transplant immunology; stem cell biology and stem cell homing; cellular and mesenchymal stem cell therapy e.g., for myocardial infarction and coronary heart diseases; molecular haemostaseology, immunohaematology and experimental stem cell transplantation.
